The essence of classical riding is being 'at one' and in tune with the horse. It is not mystical nor complex and should be possible for all riders if they work within simple guidelines. Sylvia believes that we have much to learn from the riding masters of the past. Horses have not changed since the time of Xenophon the Greek; neither has Man. Only by forgetting jargon and getting back to basics can we learn to ride classically in a progressive, structured way.
Throughout the video we can see Sylvia and her pupils working together with her different schoolmaster horses. The basic position for the rider on an advanced horse is very nearly the same as for the more novice horse. Certain techniques e.g. working the horse 'deep', and encouraging lengthening through the neck are clearly shown; as are the leg and seat aids for collection, extension and lateral work.
The video emphasises the idea of balance and the rider having responsibility for his/her own weight. There is respect for the horse's back and mouth. Every move, however miniscule, is sympathetically explained. Sylvia's approach shows a refreshing lack of dogma and the viewer is never made to feel that this way of riding is beyond the average rider. As the title suggests, Classical Riding is possible for the Everyday Rider and this is designed to further that aim.
